Trapps and oceanic plateaus

The peculiarity of this type magmatism in the fact that it happens in a short, geologically speaking time - the order of several million years, but it captures a huge area (tens of thousands of km ²); with poured a huge amount of basalt that is comparable to the number, crystallized in the mid-ocean ridges .
Well-known Siberian Traps at the East-Siberian platform traps plateau Dean in the India continent and many others. The cause of formation of traps are also considered hot mantle flows, but in contrast to the hot spots, they are short, and the difference between them is not entirely clear.
Hot spots and traps gave rise to a so-called plume geotectonics, which asserts that a significant role in geodynamic processes is not just a regular convection and plumes. Plume tectonics plate tectonics does not contradict, but complements it.
